Neil Porter was an innovative teacher who secured many tradespeople apprenticeships in Warrnambool and the surrounding areas through his work setting-up and running the Brauer College VET/VCAL program. Many of those who he secured apprenticeships went on to run their own businesses and in-turn employed apprentices on recommendation from Neil. He was held in very high regard by staff, students and the employers he placed students with. Neil had a passion for teaching students trade skills and setting them up for a career in their chosen trade. He recognised the need for hands-on learning and students receiving on-the-job training.

Neil’s work led to him being recognised at the Vocational Education and Training Network Australia Awards for Excellence in Schools. He won the state award for his ‘visionary and exemplary work in implementing vocational education and training’. Mr Paul Isbel of Western Victoria Group Training stated ‘What Neil Porter has done is nothing short of a miracle. On his own initiative he’s done what industry, training organisations, unions and governments have been talking about for years. A similar project in Geelong, with 2.5 staff and a hefty budget, found placements for 18 students. Neil has organised placements for 60 students, during one free period a week and in his spare time.’

This scholarship was created after Neil’s sudden passing on June 17th, 2018. The aim of the scholarship is to recognise the work of Neil in teaching thousands of students trade skills, securing the majority of them apprenticeships or jobs, and to continue his remarkable work.
